The collection consists of correspondence and papers, mostly 1772-1864, of various members of the Benson and related families, particularly of Egbert Benson (1746-1833), and Robert Benson (1739-1823), but including some of their father's, Robert Benson (d.1762), a New York brewer and merchant, as well as others of the younger Robert Benson's sons, Egbert (1789-1866) and Robert (1785-1872). The papers include deeds, releases, mortgages, most of which do not pertain to holdings of the Benson family, and accounts of Robert Benson when he was the city clerk during the 1780s and 1790s; briefs, memoranda, notes on trial, bills of costs, powers of attorney, and similar papers of Egbert Benson (1746-1833), relating to various cases in which he was concerned; account of mayoralty certificates issued from the clerk's office; and notebooks and compositions of Egbert Benson (1789-1866), Columbia College, 1803-1806.
